Frequently Asked Questions

How do I tell which version I have?
Basically there are 3 versions of Super Smash Brothers Melee. The first version was the one that was released when the game first came out. That version is 1.0. The other two versions were released in the months that followed. Those are 1.1 and 1.2. To tell which version you have, look on the bottom of your disk. You should see a small string of characters written around one of the inner rings of the disk. It will look something like this: DOL-GALE-0-00

That is how you tell what version you have. Basically you should ignore all parts except the last two numbers.

00 - Version 1.0
01 - Version 1.1
02 - Version 1.2

If your disk has numbers other than these, try the codes for each version until one set of codes works.

Why does it say"Data Invalid" when I input codes?
The "Data Invalid" message usually means that you made a mistake when typing in the code. Double check the code and enter it again if necessary.

Why does it say "This code is for a different game" when I input codes?
That message usually means you are entering codes for the wrong version. If you have version 1.1 or 1.2 you will need to create a new game in the Action Replay's game list. Once that is created, you should enter the master code for your version as provided on this site. It should then accept any of the codes for that version.

How do I input a master code?
Once a master code has been entered into the Action Replay, it is very difficult to edit it. For example, you cannot edit the master code for the SSBM entry that came with the Action Replay. That is the master code for 1.0 and you can't change it. Therefore, the easiest way to input a master code is to create a new game. Once you have named the game you'll come to a screen where you can name the first code. Name it (m). Then enter the code for your version on the screens that follow.

Why haven't you made the codes I requested?
Making codes for Gamecube games is simply not that easy. I understand that many of you have made codes for other platforms with other cheat devices but this one is a little different. Up until about 2 weeks ago people couldn't make codes for the AR period. Now thanks to a group of talented people we have the opportunity to try. I emphasize that word try because it is still a very difficult process. There aren't any handy tools I can use for value searches and comparisons. I can't dump the memory and look through it for interesting values. I have to use a system of educated guessing and random 'sliding' in the hopes of finding critical areas. This process is long and tedious and it makes filling requests a matter of chance. This does not mean I want you to stop making requests. I like hearing ideas for new codes. I'm just asking that you be patient with your request and understand that I'm doing the best I can with the tools currently available.

Will these codes ruin my game?
Some of you may remember codes for the original SSB on the N64 that stayed on forever, even if the Gameshark was off. That cannot happen with Action Replay codes do to the nature of the Gamecube's disk format. Using these codes cannot ruin your game. However, there is a slight chance that they could effect your save data. I do the best I can to fully test all of my codes and so far I haven't heard of any problems. But I can never rule out that some freak side-effect could occur with one of the codes that might effect your save data.
